Why Plant-Strong is Better
With all the choices of plant-based diets, why should you consider a plant-strong diet or lifestyle? Many individuals are confused with the terms and use them interchangeably. You shouldn’t, as there are differences, and I will try to clarify any misunderstanding and answer why you should consider a plant-strong diet. First, you may want to review Types of Plant-Based Diets and read Understanding Plant-Based Diets to understand plant-based diets in general better.
Plant-Strong and Whole Food, Plant-Based Diet (WFPB)
Rip Esselstyn, a triathlete, former firefighter, and best-selling author, popularized plant-strong. If you consider yourself plant-strong, you are most likely a follower of the Engine 2 Diet and Rip Esselstyn.
The Engine 2 Diet focuses on harnessing the power of whole, plant-based foods. If you choose to adhere to this diet, prepare to eat plenty of whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. Anything you eat must be 100% plant-based.
If you choose grains, you must abstain from refined grains. They must be 100% whole grains.
Total caloric consumption from fats must not be more than 25%. Of course, fats must come from natural sources, and there are to be no added oils, processed oils, or refined oils.
This diet is not classically vegan because it doesn’t promote eating fake meat or cheese substitutes, and these substitutes are not a part of a plant-strong diet.
Being plant-strong is about eating whole foods ONLY – foods grown from plants – veggies, beans, nuts, seeds, roots, grains, fruits. Nothing manufactured and nothing with a face. Another critical aspect of the plant-strong movement is that all oil is forbidden. Olive oil and all other oils are nothing but liquid fat and have no place in our diets. The caution for plant-strong advocates is that many vegan foods are highly processed and no better for your health than other highly processed foods. Thus the term plant-strong!
Food Is Supposed to Nourish
When I mention whole food plant-based diets or plant-strong, I am talking essentially about the same diet or lifestyle. Food is supposed to nourish the body, not kill it. Eating plant-based can be a transformation of humanity. People are dying for nutrition, and this is not a one-time thing. We need our essential nutrients and minerals daily, and the best way to get them is by adhering to a plant-strong or whole foods plant-based diet!
I challenge you to start thinking about your eating habits and lifestyle and changing it for the better! Think plant-strong and whole foods plant-based!
